First time buyers in the capital and south east England have to wait on average seven years longer than their counterparts in other areas of the UK to get onto the housing ladder. This is due to the unaffordability of housing in these areas. Houses in some areas of London can come in at over 10 times the average salary, whereas in the north this can be as low as only four times.
